GuyNeo Eye-Blink Wheelchair

An assistive wheelchair prototype that interprets intentional eye blinks as movement commands.

Health & SafetyStatus not specifiedProject year: 2018

The problem

People with severe motor impairment may be unable to operate conventional wheelchair controls independently.

Objective

Enable wheelchair movement through deliberate eye-blink commands.

Project story

Infrared reflectance modules mounted on glasses detect intentional blinks, which an Arduino interprets as wheelchair movement commands. The project was previously called Eye Blink Controlled Wheelchair. The team’s later plans include vital-sign monitoring, alerts and IoT control.

Other recorded results include a win at the DAV Unit-VIII Science Fair, a regional CBSE Science Fair win with representation at the national fair, and two district-level INSPIRE MANAK cash awards of ₹10,000 each (₹20,000 total). The team also represented the state in Intel’s Make Tomorrow for Innovation Generation programme, received honorary recognition at the OUAT Science Fair, and placed runner-up at the Anjali Children’s Day Fair.

How it works

Infrared reflectance modules on a pair of glasses detect intentional blinks. An Arduino interprets the signals and sends movement commands to the wheelchair drive system.
